Brian Castanon Feb 2 Dark Souls Review By: Brian Castanon Dark Souls is the game that really put the Souls series on the map with it’s skull crushing difficulty of a game. This game was the beginning of my transition into becoming a man. The game’s difficulty is a staple of modern gaming, and will be remembered for it. The gameplay is adaptive and easy to use with the targeting system being used for the enemies. The lore of Dark Souls has to be one of the most extensive, interesting, and intriguing stories of any game I’ve ever played. This game will always have a special place in my heart, and is one of my most favorite games of all time. 10/10 Bonfire Lit By Christopher McLarney 7/10 Crash Bandicoot is Sony’s Version of Mario and Sonic, all these games started out as Platformers and since Sony saw the success that Nintendo was having with Mario and how Sega had their success with Sonic they were like “We see what you did and we want that” and so Crash Bandicoot came into play. The only thing that was different from Crash’s first game and Mario and Sonic’s was that Crash’s was a 3D game where Mario and Sonic’s was was a 2D side scroller, The first of Crash’s Games was in 1996 and so was Mario and Sonic’s first 3D Games also game out in 1996 those being Mario’s “Super Mario 64” and Sonic’s “Sonic 3D Blast” even though Crash’s First Game was late compared to the Mario and Sonic Series, Crash Bandicoot was a very successful game and most of the games afterward continued to be successful, and yes even the Spin Series like Nitro Cart. A second look: By Bianca Lawrence The game Crash Bandicoot is a game that many would love to play if you like to play games to where you're trying to defeat your opponent. When you first start the game your character ‘Tiny ’ would try to defeat Tiny Tiger ( I think that’s his name) and once you do then you’ll have to defeat the lions, which was hard to figure out which attacks were possible to use. But the game is what I would call aggravating since it's a hard game to play,it’s either you get smashed by Tiny Tiger or you get eaten’ by lions(or at least when I played). But I would say it was a pretty fun game to play,it just makes you want to destroy the component more and more every time you lose. Final Fight 2 Review By Cody Maraman final fight 2 was fun to me...for the first five minutes. To me it was too linear, the combat system was simplistic the environments were boring and the enemies were not varied in any way except some being able to pick you up and some having more health than others. It eventually got boring and the lack of variation or dynamic didn't help me keep interest. To me it was boring and was not a fun game. But maybe thats what the point is....at the time games didn't have much variation, around the time period this was made, games like mega man x were revolutionary due to the new emphasis on story and formula. video games were a simple pass time and not considered the action adventures that they are today. Final fight 2 accomplished that well. It was an arcade game that was ported to consoles. Its simple and intuitive and not frightening to newcomers that have an interest in the game, it offers a simple, easy to understand atmosphere that is a fun time waster. As that it succeeds amazingly, and in doing that, inspired many modern games that built on that simple formula with story, characters, and plots (i.e GTA Arkham ect.). in conclusion.... As a modern, well made, and intuitive game, final fight 2 fails, but as a simple, easy to pick up, fun time waster, that acted as a stepping stone for modern games- Final fight 2 gets a perfect score Review by Chris McLarney 7/10 First of all I can’t really compare Ghouls ‘n Ghosts to DMC, cause I’ve never actually played a DMC game, but, what I can say is that Dark Souls must of had heavy influence from GnG in the way that you go throughout areas and fight monsters on your way to the end of the level. I believe that GnG is even a harder game than Dark Souls just because of the fact you could at least save at a bonfire and in GnG the only way I figured out how to get close to beating a level was with save states in an emulator ROM. In Dark Souls you may of had little health, but you can at least save and you can get potions for health, in GnG you get hit twice you die, no questions asked. Another difference of course is the graphics, we were playing a room of GnG on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Dark Souls is a 3rd person 3d world game where Gng is a 2d, side scroller and The 3D world with 3rd person view didn't really come out until at least the Nintendo 64, which by the way came out 5 years later then Gng itself. This is all that I can really compare about Dark Souls to GnG seeing how I only got like 30 mins of playtime, but boy ‘oh boy these games are difficult. A second look By Chris Hill Trying to compare this older game would be difficult, if not for this game being the reason for over the top difficulty in a game. This game is such a challenge compared to more modern games except maybe for Dark Souls, the infamous game for gamers as the game in which you’ll rage more often than not. Dark Souls difficulty came from you being weak, and bad at the game, and facing enemies a lot stronger than you. This older game I’m talking about is a game called Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts came from the weirdness of the levels and the fact that you die in two hits. Then you get to play the level from the beginning, yay. Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts was a Capcom made game released on the Super N.E.S. in 1991. It was the third in the Ghouls ‘n Ghosts series. The game sparked a generation of difficult games following release. People say that this game is the reason Dark Souls exists. For all the masochistic gamers out there, you can give all your thanks to Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. Super Ghouls 'n GhostsBy: Brian Castanon Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts was the precursor of games of the likes of Dark Souls and Devil May Cry. In this game you play as a knight that can get killed in 2 hits, and like all retro games, touching enemies can kill you. You also only get a limited amount of lives till the game resets the whole stage once they're all gone. There are checkpoints spread few-and-far between, so as you can imagine this game is very challenging. Also, as soon as you beat the game you must beat it again to unlock the true ending. Some of the most difficult games in the modern age seem to have drawn some inspiration from this game however. The Dark Souls franchise has been known mostly for it’s difficulty, and became popular due to it. The game also seems to be set during medieval times like Ghosts, but in a different setting obviously. Enemies don’t damage upon touch, and your character has more hit points, but you can die just as easily. In Dark Souls you can save your progression through checkpoints called bonfires, but if you die all enemies and stage are reset, and you return to the last bonfire rested at. Upon death you lose all your in-game currency, souls, and you must return to the last spot to retrieve them. Also, alike Ghost you can beat the game multiple times unlocking new endings, but the game gets even harder after each completion. The Devil May Cry franchise is also known to be difficult as well. Not in the same spectrum as Dark Souls, but difficult the same. Cry is more fast pace than Ghosts, but hit points are limited, and just like Ghosts the stage resets upon death. The enemies are merciless and hard hitting, and getting stuck in sections are common. Getting frustrated in these games are a common theme, but that’s the fun of it. Beating these games grants a feeling of accomplishment, and pride, knowing you’ve beaten a game many have gave up on. 7.5/10 Difficult example of what was to come next Conker’s Bad Fur Day Kristia Wart As I played Conker’s bad fur day, it got boring quickly. I didn’t like the game that much, especially since it was difficult to understand what in the world was happening, where you were, and the controls all together. I understand that it’s an old game. But the lighting in certain areas also bothered me because, it was not bright at all. The gameplay was also a huge challenge, I found it hard to figure out how to shoot or fight in general. Once again, I understand it is old, but with that I’m not a fan of the graphics in the game. In the end, I really didn’t like the game, due to the features listed. A second Opinion Conker’s Bad Fur Day Review By: Brian Castanon This classic gem of a game's multiplayer is surprisingly well made, and was fun. The controls are hard to maneuver, however, but it just adds to the multiplayer hysteria. There are a variety of weapons all dealing different amounts of damage, but all are similar in their functions. There is a character selection, but it many consists of what type of teddy bear, Conker, or weasel (I presume) you want to be. Nevertheless, the game was fun, and anyone with the chance to play it should. 7/10 Fun, but hard to control A quick Flipside look By Logan Priddy The game is actually extremely fun. There is all kinds of different weapons in the game. The two weapons i found to be very good are the katana and chainsaw. The controls on the game are a bit wonky but you get used to it after a while. Compare and contrast the original Mortal Kombat to Mortal Kombat X:
By Michael Hill In terms of controls the Mortal Kombat series has keep a lot of its basic moves, but it has come quite far in its 19 years of being around. Mortal Kombat X has come very far from the original Mortal Kombat. The basic moves are still there, yes but there are a lot more moves to do and new characters to learn about. In terms of graphics, the original Mortal Kombat came out in 1993, so the major, and I’m meaning, major improvements to how visually appealing the game is now. A second Opinion by Bianca Lawrence I really never played thses two types of Mortal Kombat, since I originally only play the Mortal Kombat:Kombat Edition. So I want really used to these mods nor the pixel version. The original Mortal Kombat I really didnt quite enjoy because its hard to focas on the characters when they look brurley based on the pixels, also when I played this game(the original)it first didnt let my componet to move til’ the end of the game. While the characters were very limited. But one of the other Mortal Kombat X,it was better still not quite what I was used too,but the graphics were better than the Komplete Edition, but I was proud and disappointed in the game since it didn't have my favorite Character Scarlet, but the attacks were legit, especially with Re-Zero. I would say the Mortal Kombat X was better just because of the special attacks and graphics were better than the Original Mortal Kombat. By Abigail Hibbard I liked the mario games ever since i was little, but this one was fun to bring back some old memory from when i was very young. Even though the controls were different from all the mario games i have played (wii, nintendo ds, phones, kindle fire) it was nice playing a game that i was used to and new the goal to the game. The control layout was a bit different and even though the graphics where pixelated, thouse, honestly, are my favorite types of games. I like games similar to skyrim, Call of Duty, and the mario games with their graphics, either pixelated or very high detailed. Even though my very first time playing i died like nine second into it, the second time, i would say i got decent far, and that was when everyone was saying, “don't hug the screen.” That statement did not make sense, like, do you see me physically wrapping my arms around the TV screen? Sometimes i had the urge to scream, “yall are a bunch of nerd,” then i realize i'm one of them, i just have different ways of being a nerd. My all time thing about the mario games was that it has so much history, almost like the call of duty game, they go back so far that they have timelines of when they were supposed to go or the timeline of when they were made. Unlike the the games i mostly play like skyrim and fallout (basically anything that takes me to another word, i create a character, i choose story line, and i can play first/third person with easy controls, plus great details) they don't hold a lot of history in the one game itself, it's spread over multiple games, even though they might have the same title on display. Mario did bring me back some childhood memories (makes me sound old but trust me, i'm as old as i say i am) as in watching my cousin play mario with my brothers, always trying to take my brothers ds’s just to play mario because mine didn't have it downloaded into the ds, and all the challenges me and my brothers, along with my cousin, did while playing mario games. Mario may have been around since the 1900’s or so, but this one game has been with me, someone born in the 21st century, has been playing this game almost all of their childhood, that is until xbox came along and messed with the whole thing. It was really fun experiencing this type of hype and feeling again of playing something so old, yet so entertaining to at least all. And i would be glad just to experience this once more to see if i still have the skills to pay the bills, probably not because i'm a button masher in combat games, and a crazy tanker in rpg games. |
